Isomerization of linear to angular [3]phenylene and PAHs under flash vacuum pyrolysis conditions.

Flash vacuum pyrolysis (FVP) of linear [3]phenylene affords its angular counterpart and the same mixture of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon isomers as that observed on FVP of angular [3]phenylene. A mechanism, supported by a 13C labeling study, is proposed to explain these results.

Copper(II)-promoted direct conversion of methylarenes into aromatic oximes.

A simple and efficient catalytic system for direct conversion of methylarenes into aromatic oximes has been developed, with Cu(OAc)2 as catalyst, NHPI (N-Hydroxyphthalimide) as additive, TBN (tert-butyl nitrite) as both the nitrogen source and the oxidant. This process proceeds under mild conditions, tolerates a wide range of substrates, affording the targeted aromatic oximes in 63-86% yields.

Methoxymethylene Meldrum's acid 1 reacts with 5- and 6-membered lactams in refluxing acetonitrile to give the N-substituted products 9-15. If the reactions are continued for extended times, the Meldrum's acid derivatives decompose to provide enamidoesters e.g. 22-24.
